Statistics Mauritius is the official organisation responsible for collection, compilation, analysis and dissemination of the official statistical data relating to the economic and social activities of the country.

      The Consumer Price Index (CPI) increased by 0.3 point or 0.2% from 126.8 in November 2022 to 127.1 in December 2022. The main contributors to the change in the index between November 2022 and December 2022 were: Vegetables(+0.1 index points) ; Other food products (+0.1 index points) ; Whisky (-0.1 index points) ; Interest rates on housing loan (+0.1 index points) and Other goods and services (+0.1 index points) .Year-on-year (Y-o-y) inflation worked out to 12.2% in December 2022, compared to 6.8% in December 2021.

      Note: Financial year 2019/20 has been considered as 2020.   This issue of the Economic and Social Indicators presents data on education, compiled on the basis of information collected through the annual survey conducted in schools in March 2018, together with data from other sources. The data refer to the Republic of Mauritius (excluding Agalega) and cover pre-primary, primary, secondary (general and pre-vocational), technical & vocational, tertiary as well as education in specialized institutions.

      Highlights​1.       Employment of Mauritians is estimated at 551,800 in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 531,500 in the fourth quarter of 2022 and 502,500 in the first quarter of 2022. 2.       The unemployment rate for the first quarter of 2023 is estimated at 6.7%, compared to the rate of 6.8% at the fourth quarter of 2022 and the rate of 8.7% at the first quarter of 2022. 3.       The number of persons considered to be outside the labour force is estimated at 422,900 in the first quarter of 2023 compared to 441,000 in the fourth quarter of 2022 and 459,300 in the first quarter of 2022. 4.   The main characteristics of the unemployed at the first quarter of 2023 were:​(i)    The 39,400 unemployed comprised 18,600 males (47%) and 20,800 females (53%).(ii)    Around 21,500 (55%) of the unemployed were single; males (75%) and females (36%).(iii)   Some 20,700 (53%) of the unemployed did not have the Cambridge School Certificate (SC) or equivalent and among them 3,700 had not even passed the Primary School Achievement Certificate (PSAC)/Certificate of Primary Education (CPE) or equivalent.(iv)   Around 27,400 (70%) had been looking for work for up to one year.(v)    Some 12,100 (31%) were looking for a job for the first time.(vi)   Around 17,300 (44%) were registered at the Employment Service Information Centre.(vii)  Some 4,700 or 12% of the unemployed were heads of households.(viii) Around 7,300 (19%) lived in households with no employed persons.(ix)   Some 13,800 or about 35% of the unemployed were aged between 16 to 24 years.(x)    There were 6,800 (17%) young persons aged 16 to 24 years, not yet married and looking for a first job.  Some 3,400 possessed a qualification below SC.
